Martin Papst blog post 3: Issues of border control

What comes to mind in the first place is the large border between the US and Mexico. A lot of people cross it every day legally and some cross it illegally. The big attraction is the jobs that can be gained for the Mexican people together with the possibility to send some of the money back to Mexico where the relatives would really need it.
The Americans have built a fence for many miles to prohibit Mexicans to illegally enter the states. While some people enter with valid documentation and just stay longer and disappear and go underground and start a new life, others try to cross over hot deserts and very hostile country to get across the border.

I think you have to be very desperate to take such risks to your health and probably even life to get to the Promised Land where maybe a job is possible. Mexicans have drowned in rivers and died of dehydration and heat stress in the desert. Because more and more American border patrol personnel is active, Mexicans have to try to cross the border in more hostile environments and when they get to the US they have to stay much longer in the Us and are not able to return to their families.

Although Mexicans are usually getting unskilled labor jobs and they are getting paid less because the employers do not ask for any proper documentation, it is still quite important because the money they can send home might be the main source of income for their family at home in Mexico.

Despite of all the efforts of the American border agents to shut illegal immigration down, it is estimated that out of 300,000 immigrants that enter the US from Mexico every year, about half are illegally entering.
I can only think, that when you have little education and you try to improve your life and that of your family, you are willing to accept high risks to succeed.

  2. The idea that there is a large fence isn't entirely true. The method of keeping illegals out changes from State to State. Large fences, large iron beams and even large walls are used, not just one strip of fence that goes along the entire nation. I also like how you went into the heads of the illegals and made inferences as to why they would come by the thousands to America.

    Great post!

  3. This post covers the realities of what happens while crossing the border but falls short on covering any of the human aspects. Consider how people feel while crossing the border, what drives them to go across miles of desert to reach it and why they go illegally instead of immigrating normally. People are complex things and their reasons and often very different from what is thought, try to invasion yourself in the poverty and conditions, and hearing word of the rich land to the north. Would you think going illegally would be a good idea? What would you do in that situation.

Also attempt to add an article to this like what was expected.

  4. I feel that you did a good job on this post Martin, you recognized some reasons and problems facing illegal immigration. I do feel however that you need to take specific details from the text and connect to Celia specifically. This was the purpose of the assignment, you identified some reasons however you need to find some specific articles to support your opinions and look at the moral aspect of illegal immigration. Just a few things Martin to put this post to the next level.

  6. The post you wrote Martin covers all of the real information about the border. What you forgot to add was, a article about immigration and connecting to Celia. What were the reasons why Celia decided to illegally immigrate? Was it for the same reasons that you stated in your post?
